P3Tournament Rule Sheet Overview


This rule sheet is for the Main Tournament on Friday and Saturday.


Please Note: These rules are subject to change at any time. The final rule sheet will be posted during the tournament. All decisions will be at the final discretion of the tournament staff.


How it Works







Tournament Costs


Cover Charge:
All players and spectators must purchase admission to the Pinball Wizards Convention. Admission is required to participate in the P3Tournament. This fee includes your admission only.

P3Tournament is not affiliated with the Pinball Wizards Convention.

Tournament Registration:
There is a $5 tournament registration fee for each day ($5 Saturday Only, or $10 for Friday and Saturday). You will receive a name badge and a tournament players card. You must keep this card on you at ALL times. If you loose this card you will be charged $5 for a replacement.

Qualification Entries:
For each qualification attempt, there is a $10 fee for the Advanced Bracket, and a $20 fee for the Expert Bracket.

Detailed Overview


The central hub of the tournament will be the Registration Desk. This will be located near the Free Play area at the Pinball Wizards Convention.

Your first stop during the tournament will be the Registration Desk to register. There is a $5 tournament registration fee for each day ($5 Saturday Only, or $10 for Friday and Saturday). You will receive a name badge and a tournament player's card. You must keep this card on you at ALL times. If you loose this card you will be charged $5 for a replacement.

Please Note:
$50 and $100 bills will NOT be accepted for admission, registration or qualifying entries.

At this point you may practice on any non-qualifying games in the Free Play Area. Practice on any of the qualifying games is not allowed.

When you are ready to play a qualifying entry, simply visit the Qualification Desk. The cost for a qualifying entry is $5 for the beginners division, $10 for the advanced division, and $20 for the expert division. While at the qualifying desk you must choose 3 out of the possible 5 qualifying games you are going to play. You must play these 3 games and cannot switch them later. You must present your players card to purchase a qualification attempt.

After you purchase your qualification attempt, you will receive a card with a return time printed on it. Return to the Qualification Desk near your return time. There will be a sign that indicates the next players. When your number appears on the Now Playing sign, enter the line and wait for the scorekeeper to call your number to play your qualification attempt.

When you are finished with your game, raise your hand for the scorekeeper. The scorekeeper will enter your scores into the computer system that will instantly allow you to see your current rank against the other players. You will then be assigned to your next qualification game. Play your remaining two games in the same manner.

The Scorekeeper will announce last call to purchase qualifying cards 30 minutes before the end of the qualifying rounds. (see schedule page) Qualification purchase may end early if all qualification time-slots are sold out.

The top players in each division will move onto the Final Tournament Rounds. The Final Tournament Rounds will be double-elimination. (see full rule sheet below for details).

Food & Beverage Soda and Snacks will be available for purchase at the Pinball Wizards Convention. On Saturday the farmers market is open next door to the convention.

Alcoholic Beverages are not permitted inside or consumed on the property.

Qualification At least 5 pinball machines will be dedicated to qualification play in each division. The machines selected may span different generations. The machines will be marked with a marquee and will NOT be playable without contacting the scorekeeper.

The scoring will be based upon your position for the 3 games played.

First Place 100 points Second Place 95 points Third Place 90 points 4th Place – downward 89 to 0 points

Your qualifying event total will be the sum of these points for each machine. Also as more qualifying scores come in your positions on machines, corresponding point total and overall rank in the tournament will change.

If there is a tie between two qualifying entries, the overlapping game will be used as a tiebreaker.

Ex: Jon plays Fish Tales, Whitewater and Adams Family – he gets 1st (100 points), 2nd (95 points), and 3rd place (90 points). His total points are 285. However Paul plays Taxi, Doodle Bug, and Adams Family – he gets 3rd (90 points), 1st (100 points) and 2nd (95 points). Again his total is 285 points, however since the on the overlapping game (Adams Family) he had a better score, he would be ranked higher then Jon.

Players may only play in one division. Once they choose the division they wish to qualify for they may not change divisions unless approved by the scorekeeper. The scorekeeper may choose to require a player to play in the advanced or expert division if they see fit. To be fair to all players please play the in division appropriate for your skill level.

Friday and Saturday qualifiers are treated and scored separately. A single player can qualify on any or all of the qualification days.

All qualification entries are ranked individually. There is a rare case when your own qualifying entries can actually score against you. This is a very rare circumstance and is most likely not going to happen to you, however keep it in mind.

Ex: Jon plays: Fish – 5th (88 points) Whitewater – 8th (85 points) Adams – 3rd (90 points) Total: 263 points

Paul: Qualification entry 1 Fish – 10th (83 points) Whitewater – 9th (84 points) Adams – 2nd (95 points) - score 12,500,000 Total: 262 points

Qualification entry 2 Fish – 8th (85 points) Whitewater – 7th (86 points) Adams – 3rd (90 points) - scored 12,450,000 Total: 261

If he had not played Adams in Qualification Entry #1 – he would have had 2nd place and therefore 95 points, bringing his total to 266 points, and beating Jon.

Keep this in mind when you are playing. It is to your advantage to choose different games from your previous qualifying entry.

A player can void a qualification at any time by scanning their card into the status computer and clicking the void entry button. You may not void an entry once it has been completed.
Final Tournament Rounds The following players will advance to the Final Tournament Rounds:

  Friday Saturday Total
Expert (A) Top 3 Top 5 8 players
Advanced (B) Top 3 Top 5 8 players
Beginners (C) Top 3 Top 5 8 players

A single player can possibly qualify on multiple days, reducing the number of final players.

The top 8 players in Advanced and Expert will advance to the final tournament rounds. The Final Rounds will be strict double elimination play. The brackets will be ordered by your qualification standings.

The brackets for Advanced and Expert Division will be as follows:
1st Place \
8th Place /
2nd Place \
7th Place /
3rd Place \
6th Place /
4th Place \
5th Place /

Standings will be updated real time as the scores come in. There will be an area for spectators to watch the final tournament rounds.

For each match play, the highest seeded player can choose either the game of play, or the order of play. A player may only pick the same game once during this selection process. If the highest seeded player chooses to pick order of play, the second player chooses the game of play (this forced selection does not count toward his game selection limit).

Prizes Once the final tournament rounds have been completed, the top 3 players in each division will be awarded their prizes. You must be present to win or make prior arrangements with the event staff. See the Divisions & Prizes page.

All taxes are the sole responsibility of winners. P3Tournament reserves the right to pay by cash or check. All decisions by tournament officials regarding winners and prizes are final.
Player Etiquette Rules VERY IMPORTANT: Please Follow These Rules:

  • NO EXTRA BALLS
    Please plunge any extra balls that you receive. You may not touch the flipper buttons or nudge the machine during this time.
  • NO DELAY OF GAME
    Maximum 5 second flipper hold time during single and multiball play.
  • NO BANGBACKS / DEATHSAVES
    Abuse of the machines will not be tolerated.
  • GOOD SPORTSMANSHIP AT ALL TIMES
    Absolutely no purposely distracting or sabotaging other players

Any players found in excessive violations will be removed from the tournament without refund.
Machine Settings The following settings will be used on machines that support them:
  • Tournament Mode
  • Free Play
  • 3 Balls
  • Extra Balls disabled
  • Buy-In or Continues disabled
  • Game Restart disabled
  • 2 Tilt Warnings (may be 0 on older machines)
  • Flipper AutoLaunch disabled
  • Timed AutoLaunch disabled
  • Standard Factory Settings for Ball Savers, Difficulty, Timers, etc
  • Specific Difficulty Settings as determined by tournament officials
  • Automatic Reflexing Features disabled
  • Replays disabled (no score or Extra Ball awarded)

These settings may vary at the discretion of event staff.
Mechanical Malfunctions Known Malfunctions
Any malfunction that is determined to be minor will be posted on the affected machine (at the discretion of the tournament staff). No changes to scores already posted will be made and players will not be allowed to replay the machine.

Beneficial Malfunctions
Any malfunctions that are deemed beneficial to only one player in a multiplayer situation (or during qualifiers) shall be brought to the attention of the event staff. In most cases the scores will be voided, the problem with be fixed and the players will be allowed to replay the game.

Minor Malfunction
Any malfunctions that are minor in nature and do not cause a player loss of turn or significantly benefit another player are considered a minor malfunction. This is a normal part of pinball and no action will be taken.

Some examples: A switch fails to register (but for all players), a scoop kicks the ball out at an odd or SDTM angle.

Major Malfunction
Any malfunctions that are significant in nature and cause a player a loss of turn or a significant disadvantage are considered major malfunctions. These must be brought up immediately to the event staff that will take the necessary actions.

Ex: Ball is still in play but machine stops game play. Lit kickback fails to return ball into play. Balls are stuck and will not free themselves.

What is not a major malfunction: Any loss of balls caused by a major malfunction during multi-ball that do not end the players turn. Air ball that jumps over flippers. Scoops that do not kick the ball out where expected or SDTM.

Major malfunctions must be reported immediately. Any action taken is at the discretion of the event staff.

Player Errors
The following actions will result in a player getting a zero for their game and even possible being removed from the tournament without refund:
  • Purposely slam tilting machines
  • Performing Bang backs or Death Saves. (Once the ball travels down an out lane it is considered out of play)
  • Taunting or distracting other players
  • Playing out of turn (purposely)
Rulings
All rulings are at the discretion of the event staff. ALL RULINGS ARE FINAL and cannot be argued with. If you have a problem with any of the event staff or their rulings, you may register a formal complaint with the president of the P3Tournament. However anyone who is arguing with tournament officials will be removed from the tournament. Please be considerate and politely bring your issues to the event president.

ANYONE caught disobeying the rules deliberately will be removed from the tournament without refund. We appreciate your cooperation and honesty.
